Categories
The R+D Awards will be judged according to three categories, reflecting different stages of the research and development process.
→ Prototype
Products, materials, and systems that are in the prototyping and testing phase
→ Production
Products, materials, and systems that are commercially available for use
→ Application
Products, materials, and systems as used in a single architectural project or group of related architectural projects
The jury will consider new materials, products, and systems as well as unconventional uses of existing materials, products, and systems.
Entries will be judged for their potential or documented innovation in fabrication, assembly, installation, and performance.
All entries will be judged according to their potential to advance the aesthetic, environmental, social, and technological value of architecture.
Eligibility
The awards are equally open to architects, designers of all disciplines, engineers, manufacturers, researchers, and students. Commercial products must be available in the United States; noncommercial strategies must have been developed by individuals and groups based in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico. Submitted projects must have been completed no earlier than January 1, 2005.
Announcement
The awards will be announced in a press statement to be released in conjunction with the publication of the August 2008 issue. Architect will confirm receipt of each submission, by e-mail, to the contact person identified on the online entry form. Due to the anticipated volume of entries, Architect cannot respond to inquiries about the status of submissions. Award winners will be contacted in midsummer. Receipt of an award must remain absolutely confidential until the publication of the August 2008 issue.
Event

Publication
The winning entries will appear in the August 2008 issue of Architect, both in print and online.
Image Rights
Sign and submit the Permission to Use Images form as instructed.
Architect may request original art for winning projects to ensure the highest quality images in the magazine. All originals will be returned after the publication of the August issue.

subsequent entries: $75 each

Payment
Architect will only accept credit-card payment (Visa, MasterCard, or American Express). Registration is only available at architectmagazine.com .
Disqualification
The editors of Architect reserve the right to refuse publication of winning entries that fail to meet the entry criteria.
Registration
Registration is available at architectmagazine.com . The website will issue “tickets” for each submission and e-mail a confirmation from EventBrite on behalf of Architect.
Multiple Submissions
To be eligible for the subsequent entry discount all entries must be registered at one time. All submissions must include a separate entry form with information for each project.
Submission Requirements
All entries must:
- Be submitted in a soft-cover binder
- Be printed on 8½- x 11-inch white paper
- The first page in the binder must be the submission statement, see entry form for more information
- Include a fully completed, typewritten copy of the entry form and one copy of the confirmation from EventBrite (on behalf of Architect) and enclosed in a plain 9x12 envelope, binder clipped to the cover
- Include a dvd/cd-rom labeled with the entrant’s name and the name of the project, and containing the entry binder pages in pdf format, enclosed in the plain envelope
- The entrant’s name, company, institution, etc., should not appear anywhere in the binder, including the statement. Only the envelope should contain such information.

Returns
If you would like Architect to return your entry, enclose a self-addressed, prepaid FedEx airbill, a FedEx envelope or FedEx Pak, and a $10 handling fee per entry with your submission. The return shipment should be ready for return and need no addition preparation. Any returns using a carrier other than FedEx will not be returned (this includes USPS, UPS, Airborne, etc.). Architect cannot be responsible for submissions.

Architect Magazine's R+D Awards
New technologies are revolutionizing the process and product of architecture. To celebrate advances in building technology, architect proudly announces the second annual R+D Awards. The awards honor innovative materials and systems at every scale—from entire buildings and complexes to HVAC and structural systems to curtain-wall and ceiling-panel assemblies to discrete building materials such as wood composites and textiles. The R+D Awards are intentionally open to building technologies of all types in order to encourage the broadest possible dialogue among architects, engineers, manufacturers, researchers, students, and designers of all disciplines.
